Well, we overslept because my watch is dying and I didn’t hear the alarm… and I don’t even know if it really did go off or not. Anyway, Mauricio, the guy with the mule was waiting for us for an hour and a half and we finally got going by 5:45. The earlier you leave the better cause the heat in the canyon is pretty extreme even by 8 am in the morning. It took us about 3 hours to get out of the canyon, and Paul had to be the hard-ass and carry his pack all the way out. He was literally soaked from head to toe with sweat when we arrived at the top. Mauricio led us back into the town at the top of the canyon (Cabanaconde) and directed us to a good restaurant to get some affordable breakfast. Then we waited outside for the bus back to Arequipa. On the bus I talked to a couple of local girls that were traveling back to a hotel in Maca a tiny town further up the canyon where they worked. They were quite nice and one was really cute… but by now (couple weeks later trying to write this) I cant remember their names and her email address that she wrote on my arm had worn off in the much needed shower I took as soon as I got back to civilization in Arequipa. Oh well… thats the way it goes traveling… you meet so many people its really hard to keep up with all of them. Guess thats why I’m trying to keep up this journal…

Well, in Nazca we woke up early Saturday morning (9 am-ish) for our flight over the desert to view the infamous Nazca Lines. Not a bad deal… $30 for a 45 minute flight in a small little Cesna. We drove out to the airport and upon arrival they had us watch a very interesting video on the lines published by National Geographic Society (in English! wow!). The video gave the history of how the lines and designs were discovered about 40 years ago by Maria Reiche, and how they have been studied and speculated upon by many. No one really knows the true reason why they were created, but some people think it was to communicate with aliens, and to direct them where to land their space ships. Others think that the huge trapezoidal designs that do indeed look like spaceship runways, were used to point to sources of water, an invaluable resource to the desert people. It is interesting because some of the animal representations (hummingbird, monkey, etc) are not found anywhere near the Nazca desert, and suggests that the peoples were well connected with jungle communities, to whom these animals are of great importance.

Peru-NazcaLines-Hummingbird.jpg

The shaman of the jungles would take a medicine called San Pedro and have incredible hallucinations and out of body experiences that have often been explained as floating above the ground like an eagle… which is the only really good way to view the images. Check out this Nazca Lines site and scroll down to view some pictures from the air of the animal depictions and to read a detailed explanation of the lines. VERY Interesting, and definitely a highlight of my trip!

See also Discovery Channel’s information on Nazca.

We had a hell of a time crossing the border. Actually getting there and walking across the bridge into peru was quite easy, but we got across and it was quite hot and we were tired of being hassled by cab drivers and so we went into a police station to see what we should do. They recommended we get a taxi to the immigrations office which was 5 km further down the road from the border. So we did for 10 soles… not a bad price. But once we got there and got the entrance stamp in the passport we just got back into the taxi not thinking about anything and they took us to the next town called Tumbes and upon arrival charged us an additional 50 soles per person… the total came to 110 soles which was about US$30. We had been had! we just weren’t paying close attention and so after that we got out and found a ride to the surf town of Máncora another hour and a half away for 5 soles. Máncora was quite cool… there was a nice left break for us goofy footed people. It was low season and there weren’t too many people about but the hotel we chose to stay at had a huge group of older people staying there and they were celebrating the birthday of the owner of the hotel. It was quite funny to see these people dancing to salsa music and stuff, but after we’d had enough of that we went out walking down the main street… which was the only street actually. There wasnt much going on so we bought a couple cervezas and wine in a box and went and chilled onthe beach with local kid. The next day we booked a bus cama (bus with beds) for the 16 hour journey south to Lima. The bus was to leave at 4:30 PM so we had all day to hang out at the beach, and I was plannning to wake up really early and rent a surf board but when I got up at 8 it was quite overcast and there were no waves. There were actually no waves all and a fierce on shore wind was causing the water to be quite choppy and not even worth swimming in. The small town was quite excellent and we will probably stop back by there on the way back to Ecuador at the end of our trip… hoping for better weather. The good end to this story was that we caught the bus and it was quite luxurious. I slept rather well on the overnight ride to Lima and arived Thursday morning around 11:00.
